Agnone is a beautiful mountain village in the south of Italy. My Italian friend grew up here and her grandparents still live hidden away in the beautiful village.
She always told me that she used to live on a mountain, but the image that came to mind was her on an actual mountain as a kid and that made me think she meant something different. When I visited Agnone with her, it was a clear realisation that she really did live on the mountain and go to a tiny school on the mountain. Her grandparents still live ON the mountain.
Her parents used to be neighbours (literally) and were also brought up here. It’s strange to fathom that this place exists. This very small village on a mountain. But it does. We had a big family meal around the table and as the family prepared the meal we also went onto their big balcony and took in the view. The house was on one of the steep parts of the mountain as you can get a little dizzy going around and around. This didn’t stop us the though.
We went on a small quad and it was probably one of the best experiences of my life. The sun was setting, I could see endless views of the mountains and we were going fast. It was exhilarating, scary and such an adrenaline rush. It goes in my top ten moments.
Fire Show & Markets
On the day we were in Agnone there was also a weekend market lower down in the town and a crazy fire show at night where people carried a number of timber on their backs. I can’t recall clearly but I think the highest number for one person was eighteen. The show was spectacular as they made their way through the endless street.
Everyone smelt of smoke and the air was crisp with a chill that got heated every time someone went by with a flame. This beautiful mountain village is a great escape for those you want to disappear for a while.
