The Melbourne Trail

I’ve said this to many people here but I’ll say it again. Melbourne itself is like a casino that you never leave. Days turn into nights and before you know it, it’s been five months of fun, laughter, tears, working and living an easy but not consistent life.

Our visa means you’re not allowed to make long commitments, which is irritating as I love my job! The thing is, I don’t even feel like a backpacker, I haven’t left Melbourne once! I took a week long trip to the Dandenongs, a mountain range with long green treks and beautiful views. I even saw an Australian animal. We were waiting for a bus and googling what to do if you come face-to-face with a kangaroo. Indefinitely freaking ourselves out and learning how to act in threatening circumstances. All of a sudden there’s rustling behind the bus stop. Something is moving right behind us and we can’t see it. With hesitation we walked to the side and instead of the scary animal I envisioned, I came face to face with an anteater. I mean a wild kangaroo sighting would have pleased me too, but I was instantly less freaked out.

Melbourne Dandenongs

Guess what? Going to the mountains, was not leaving Melbourne. Melbourne is huge. I was apparently still in Melbourne. Never ending rolling hills and a beautiful landscape, mixed with the CBD’s sky high buildings and not to forget the coast, the sea, the sand, St Kilda. How can anyone imagine leaving? Or get around to leaving when there’s so much to do.

At first I thought I was procrastinating for months on end, not writing too much. I guess what happens when you give yourself time to breathe and your body a break from London’s lifestyle, is you stop, appreciate and let it all sink in. Play around with the minute details, let the taste settle at the tip of your tongue, then when you’re ready, that will transfer to the page, at its own pace.

So, I know it’s been a while, but get ready for the overload!
