Ripe Oranges & Slow Shots In Sorrento

I have always wanted to go to the Amalfi coast. I didn’t realise how close Torre Annunziata is to Sorrento. I was staying with friends in Torre, Naples and they took me for a slow walk around the town. We arrived at a small cliff edge and they asked me to identify what I could see in the distance across the water. It was the Amalfi Coast and Sorrento was winking back at me (it may have been the sun).

A very old and rickety train ride away. we visited Sorrento in the evening. The streets were buzzing with tourists and locals alike. The sidewalks are also paved with orange trees, tempting you from their superior positions. I really wanted to grab an orange or two, why not eat one of Sorrento’s most valued product for free? Apparently, if I went ahead with my really random but overpowering need to climb up a tree, I’d be tasting one of their most sour oranges.

My attempt was thwarted. I saved myself the job of making one of those disgusted expressions people make when eating something sour or acidic. A bit like toilet cleaner but with a zest to it. Although there were plenty there for me to buy. The streets were lined with shops specifically to buy Sorrento’s best merchandise. Food, drinks, sweets, kitchenware and many other objects were available to buy, adorned with or using lemons and oranges from this beautiful place.

A few of the stores we went into offered me free shots of Limoncello. Originally not a fan of something too sweet, after my third shot I was ready to buy a bottle or a dozen. We must bare in mind that while I was ‘shoting’ these drinks served in shot glasses, my Italian friends were sipping them. Apparently whenever there’s a time to sip, I always shot. Italy is about appreciating and tasting slowly with consideration and enjoyment. The drinks were delicious. They gave you quite a warm buzz as they went down.

The cobbled streets are easy to manoeuvre if you’re not wearing heels. Something I happen to do whenever on a steep walk up a mountain or a city on a cliff. If you get to the outer-edges of Sorrento, you’ll be able to look across. It was quite a novelty to see Torre from the other side. Sorrento in the night time glistens, it has a charm about it and is a very pretty city to aimlessly walk around.
