The Heart Of Authentic Naples

While staying with my friend and his family in Naples I got the chance to see the true authentic city. Not only did I stay on the outskirts in a beautiful place called Torre Annunziata (not too far from Mount Vesuvius), but they took me around the city.

Dead-centre in the heart of Naples you’ll find markets on markets. One is the fish market which I personally tried to avoid but couldn’t. This coastal city is brimming with sea lovers and their delicacy is seafood. Something I was always averse to but after spending time there I can have one seafood dish. I’m still not going anywhere near fish!  As we walked away from the fish market we found another clothes market. Here you could find very fashionable garments for really cheap prices.

Narrow Streets In Naples

My favourite part was before we walked into the most tourist-like part of Naples. The street was narrow and all the flats were built tall. As you looked up you could see them towering over you. Music was blaring out of windows and washing was hung on lines connecting from one person’s window, to the parallel residence. There was a feel of community here and it was palpable. I walked down and Italian men were whistling along to the music playing and women were having conversations over their balcony tops.

We walked slowly down this street, in Naples everyone walks slowly. I know the pace is quite representative of the South, but in Naples especially they did it with attitude and style. The journey to the tourist parts was my favourite but that doesn’t take away from the seaport view of Mount Vesuvius towering over Naples, or the couples walking hand-in-hand by the sea.

This very cultural, romantic and trendy part of the south has quickly become one of my favourite places.
